Just ran across some interesting videos. Thought you might care to see.
You may remember an old post of mine making fun of viral ads. Well, this may be the absolute worst set of viral ads I have ever seen. A marketing firm known as Zipatoni, has created a PSP fansite called “All I want for Xmas is a PSP“. It is a very poorly made fansite, that people are supposed to assume is made only by fans, and only motivated by love of the system. When in fact it is merely a marketing website fueled by Sony’s pockets. Watch the video below, just to see how stupid Sony thinks we really are. Seriously this is insulting, and don’t get me wrong, I want to like the PSP. It has some great features, and I think that PS1 emulation stuff could be great. But Sony, you are actually making me not want one with this shit. To give you an idea of the typical dialect on the fansite, read this introduction to the video. Pay attention PSP fans, this is how your main demographic is perceived: Illiterate wanna’ be thugs who can’t spell. For all I know, maybe that is the main demographic.
” our boy Cousin Pete ‘rapped up these crazy beatz and rhymes & put them under our tree! much luv and thx, pete. ”
Exhibit B. Mere days after the Wii launched, crazy techies worked feverishly to crack the Wiimotes Bluetooth communications. Using open source Bluetooth communications sniiffers, turns out it wasn’t to hard. And the Wiimote is all but a PC accessory now. People have used it to control FPS games, and even racers. But the most original, and stupid, is sure to get all the nerds goin’: Wiisaber. That’s right, just swing the Wiimote around, listen to the light saber sounds on your computer, and record yourself with a camera looking far more stupid than you realize. Then, be sure to post it on YouTube, as this poor sap did.
Finally, here’s a little creative film called Wii boy. If this were viral advertising, it would be the way to do it. It’s a simple, inspired and original premise motivated by appreciation for a console, in other words, not bought. Wii Boy goofily shows us what rabid anticipation and an over active imagination can do when you are eagerly awaiting a console. I like it, but I can definitely understand if you think it’s stupid. If you do, just say “That’s stupid” in the comments.
